Doctrinal Sermon

Bro Jerry Miller, October 3, 2015

Brother Miller came forward stating how he has enjoyed the association this year and asking prayers as preaches. He began by reading the 1st Article of Faith – “Of the Scriptures.” He said that the Holy Bible is the greatest book ever printed. It has been misused, distorted, and mocked. Though people have tried to discredit it, it still stands. It is God’s Word. We can recommend other books to read, but the Bible is the best to read. Brother Miller stated that he wants, by the help of God, to set forth the love of God. We should be thankful that we have the Bible today. You will never wear out the Word of God. It will always be the truth. He then read 2 Timothy 3:16-18 and 2 Peter 1:20-21. It is God’s Word, not man’s. He then read Hebrews 4:12 and Joshua 17:17. God’s Word is profitable, live, and powerful. The Word of God is the sword of the Spirit. It is sharper than any two-edged sword. It cuts deeper than the flesh. The Word of God cuts us inside and makes us see what we really are. Brother Miller related how he was told about the way God would save him. As a child, he was told about the scripture. The scripture will not save you (John 5:39); the Holy Spirit bears that witness. Do you love the Word of God? He then read Psalm 119:89-105. It is time for us to revisit the Word of God. In times past, people loved God’s Word more than themselves. We need to treasure it more than entertainment. Could we honestly say that we love our Bible (the Word of God)? Our love is marked by spending time with it. You will find better things in the scripture than on television. We should be excited to hear His Word. The Word of God should affect us. Brother Miller then read Acts 20:9. What’s wrong with long preaching if we love the Word of God? An hour is too long for preaching, but three hours is ok for a ballgame. It is sad that we are more patient with the things that entertain our flesh than with listening to the Word of God. He then read from Nehemiah 8. We need to be attentive to the things being said. We need to love it enough and respect it enough to be patient enough to listen to God’s Word, no matter how long it takes. Time should not matter. We should not have to hurry. Sin is abounding and the world is getting darker. We need to illuminate God’s Word. We need to receive the Word of God with readiness of mind. We need to study to be sure the truth is being told. It is important to vocally endorse God’s Word. Visitors need to know what they are hearing is the truth from verbal endorsements. We are taught to “amen” the Word of God. God’s Word will never be destroyed. He read Matthew 24:34. His Word will never pass away. Brother Miller said that he is thankful for those who preach and stand for the Word of God. It is a fire in them. He told how he has been blessed to be able to preach the Word of God. We ought to love it and cherish it. Do we really love God’s Word? Do our actions show that we do? We are being challenged today whether or not we truly love God’s Word.

Brother Moran then came forward with the statement, “Why shouldn’t we love the Word of God?”
